What is a root server?
Virtual or physical server with full root access. You are responsible for the system yourself.
A root server gives full administrator rights on the operating system. You install, configure and back up everything yourself. PawHost provides the hardware, network and power supply. The system on top belongs to the customer.
Two types
| vServer (KVM) | Virtual machine. The hardware is shared with other machines, resources depend on the variant. |
|---|---|
| Dedicated server | Physical server that belongs entirely to the customer. No shared hardware. |
What you do yourself
- Choose the operating system and keep it up to date
- Secure access: SSH keys, firewall, fail2ban
- Install services (web server, database, game server)
- Create backups and test restoring them
The steps are in the articles of this category, in the order of the checklist.
