Set up DNS records
Point the domain to webspace, servers or other targets.
PawHost offers free DNS hosting. You create records in the customer panel.
All record types
| A | Links a name to an IPv4 address, e.g. webspace or server. |
|---|---|
| AAAA | Links a name to an IPv6 address. |
| CNAME | Makes one name an alias of another, e.g. www pointing to example.de. The domain itself (without www) must not have a CNAME. |
| MX | Defines which mail server accepts mails for the domain. The priority controls the order, lower numbers come first. The target must be a name, not an IP address. |
| TXT | Free text. Used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verifications, see Mail accounts. |
| NS | Names the nameservers responsible for the domain. The DNS provider sets these values; you only change them when switching provider. |
| SOA | Administrative data of the zone, e.g. serial number and refresh times. Created automatically by the DNS provider and not changed by hand. |
| SRV | Names server and port for a specific service, e.g. _sip._tcp.example.de. |
| CAA | Defines which certification authorities may issue SSL certificates for the domain, e.g. Let's Encrypt. Optional, but an extra protection against false certificates. |
| PTR | Links an IP address to a name (reverse DNS). It is not maintained in the domain zone but with the provider of the IP, see Mail accounts. |
Procedure
- Open DNS management for the domain.
- Create a record, e.g. an A record pointing to the IP of the target.
- Save the change and allow a few hours for it to spread.
- Check with
dig example.de Aornslookup example.de.
The TTL value determines how long other servers keep the old answer. Before a move, lower the TTL in advance.
